Ubicomp '13 workshop: Human Interfaces for Civic and Urban Engagement (HiCUE '13)

http://hicue2013.blogspot.fi/

HiCUE '13 invites papers for the first international workshop of Human Interfaces for Civic and Urban Engagement, co-organized with the 2013 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2013). The day-long workshop will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013, before the main conference. The workshop will be conducted as a single mini-track, in which each participant will present his/her workshop paper (10 minutes), followed by a short (5 minutes) discussion. The workshop will be wrapped up with a panel discussion and an informal coffee break for networking with other researchers.

** Objectives **
The first objective of this workshop is to provide a shared forum for researchers interested in public human interfaces in urban environments. This includes all who are interested in building novel interfaces as well as researchers and practitioners utilizing already existing and deployed interfaces in modern cities. The main focus is in broad civic purposes, such as information dissemination, obtaining feedback from citizens and citizen participation in general.

We hope this workshop will make an impact as a venue for urban computing researchers to join and share their knowledge, experience reports and frustrations in engaging users in authentic settings for civic purposes.

The long-term objective of the HiCUE workshop will be to foster a community interested in how to provide interfaces to the human inhabitants of a City, how they can effortlessly interact with it while going about their daily lives, and what we can learn from the appropriation of the provided technology and services.

** Topics of interest **
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • APPLICATIONS: applications with a civic purpose and that are designed to be run or are evaluated in authentic settings, i.e. outside the laboratory
  • EXPERIENCE REPORTS: user evaluation or descriptive reports of long-term installations that inform or promote civic engagement in urban environments
  • METHODOLOGIES: methods and methodologies for evaluating human interfaces for civic purposes
  • SYSTEMS AND ARCHITECTURES: middleware, databases and system architectures for information storing and dissemination in urban environments
  • User-centered analytic tools and interactive visualizations of urban City and its information in a user friendly form

Note that we plan for accepted manuscripts to be included in the ACM Digital Library and supplemental proceedings of the main conference. All workshop papers must be up to 4 pages long in the SIGCHI archival format, and be ready for inclusion into ACM digital library and the supplementary proceedings by June 19th, 2013.

Further, after the workshop the organizers will compose a journal article of the most prominent contributions of the accepted submissions to report on the state of the art of public human interfaces for civic purposes in smart cities.

** Submissions **
The workshop papers must be in the SIGCHI archival format, up to 4 pages. You do not need to anonymize the submissions. All submissions should be emailed in .PDF format to hicue@ee.oulu.fi with the subject line "HiCUE workshop submission". The papers will be peer-reviewed accordingly for their significance to the overall workshop themes by the technical program committee of the workshop.

** Proceedings **
If the authors choose so, accepted workshop papers will be added to the ACM Digital Library. However, the workshop participants can also choose to keep the copyrights of the publications and therefore their accepted paper will not be added to the ACM Digital Library. This means that you are allowed to fully reuse the publication contents in other future work. Furthermore, a journal article combining the most interesting contributions from the accepted workshop papers will be submitted to a future international journal issue.

** Important dates (in GMT+1) **
Deadline for submissions: May 24th, May 31 2013
Response to authors: June 10th, 2013
Camera-ready workshop papers deadline: June 19th, 2013
